PEOPLE Magazine Vs. REAL BOOKS
I love to read pretty much anything.
In Indonesia, I found this amazing book at the hotel's reception: The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker. I had no idea the author was some 29 year old genius and that his writing skills were over the top, but it didn't matter. I just dove in and 670 pages later, I was just sad it was over. I wanted at least another 100 pages. That's how good it was.
And that's why I always take chances and don't do much research when it comes to reading material. Funny books, serious books, sad books, recipe books ... I am pretty much game for any book. I have even read books about finance and acclaimed criminals - my ex-boyfriend was into them, so of course I had to check them out.
My point is I am not difficult when it comes to reading material. I just read. I am not some sort of writer who rides are on a literary high horse and only talks about Hemingway or Proust. My favorite author is Nora Ephron. In my opinion, her writing and self deprecating humor are incredible, but it doesn't mean I will put you down if you have never heard of her. There are so many good books out there.
But gossip magazines are my big NoNo.
So every time I see someone at the airport news kiosk spending $5 on a copy of People Magazine, I want redirect them that at the Hudson Bookstore, where for just five extra dollars, they could get a great book. 300 pages of good writing, perhaps amazing writing versus 30 pages of rubbish. Why do I even have to make my case?
Yet this is what us flight attendants mainly find on the plane once all the passengers are off.
I was surprised to see that neither Kim Kardashian was on the cover, nor some blonde half naked girl. Instead, I noticed Princess Kate and the following title: " Kate bounces back!" I have to say the title picked my curiosity. What was she bouncing back from? Ebola?
So I admit I gave in and opened up this magazine I despise so much, and there it was (NOT): valuable information and mind blowing writing skills. And in case you don't believe me, here are two excerpts of the article:
So why do people keep buying this trash? Why?
Instead, go buy the book I mentioned above ... or my book -:)
Oh but the way, Princess Kate is bouncing back from morning sickness - Mind-blowing, right?

EAT WELL, TRAVEL OFTEN, TAKE PICTURES
SARA
So true, I agree with you and still can't understand why people read magazines full of trash instead of reading books!
