Corsican Adventure

When traveling for a wedding, it makes it a little harder to be adventurous and spontaneous but it is still possible. It might create a little stress here and there, like when you are driving from the church ceremony to the reception venue and dont know where you will shower or iron your clothes for the black tie event…

But if you are lucky enough to have a travel partner who doesn’t stress easily (I am) it will be ok and you will find an adorable little hotel along the way, with a magnificent view and top notch service and not even be late for the reception. This is how we found Hotel des Roches in Sartene, located between Ajaccio and Domaine de Murtolli.

But let me first back up to the very start of our journey.

We flew from Los Angeles to Nice and since that was about 14 hours of flying, we decided a relaxing night in Nice before continuing would be nice. But being the blogger that I am, I was restless and we ended up exploring the Èze Castle a bit that evening. I will write more about Eze soon, but here is a taste of the view for now.

The following day, our Corsica adventure started by taking a ferry from Nice to Ajaccio. The ferry leaves right in the middle of town so it saved us the hassle of having to go back to the airport and deal with security and checking bags etc… But more importantly the views leaving the Nice harbor were gorgeous: we could see a different perspective of the town, we caught a nice shot of Èze and Villefranche-sur-mer and then the ferry turned around and we got to see the entire Promenade des Anglais. It was beautiful.

Taking the ferry versus taking a plane also came with the added bonus of a beautiful sunset on the bar deck. The weather being overcast all day, I had given up on sunset but my husband decided with or without sunset, it was still happy hour and there it was: a vibrant orange sky that turned into a soft pink sky and lasted for a good hour. It was magical and the pina coladas from the bar were yummy.

We also got to see beautiful mountains but I honestly cannot tell you if it was Corsica or Sardinia since the islands are so close to each other but it was definitely beautiful.

The only thing I would have done differently is maybe rent a car directly from Nice airport and keep it throughout the entire trip since we really struggled to find a cab when getting off the ferry in Ajaccio, and by struggled I mean we didn’t find any and walked to our hotel - thankfully only 20 minutes though.

However keep in mind you can only take a car roundtrip if you have a lot of time on your hands and can take the ferry back to Nice. We didn’t, so we flew back from Ajaccio to Nice to catch our flights back to New York and Los Angeles all in the same day. Just writing it made me exhausted all over again :-) But Corsica was totally worth the exhaustion and it was easy to rent a car from Avis in the city center and drop it off at the Ajaccio airport right before our flight. Only costs us 70 euros for 2 full days and trust me you want to drive in Corsica. The views while driving are too beautiful to be stuck in a tour bus.

Here is a taste of Propriano, a beach we happened to find on our way from Ajaccio to Sartene and Olmetto, a picturesque little town we discovered while searching for Propriano.
More details on these little tows and beautiful Porto Vecchio in my post next Sunday.

And here is the link for the ferry in case you want to start planning your own adventure asap -:) Ferry Corse
