Speed Dating Anyone?

A few weeks ago, I dropped my name in a raffle and won a Speak Easy event hosted by French Morning, a french online magazine based in the US.

It sounded pretty much like speed dating to me and since I have always "found" boyfriends without a third party, I wasn't exactly thrilled to be set up. I like spontaneity.
However the French Morning event coordinator Marion explained to me the event was really about practicing either your French or English, not meeting your soulmate.

I will be honest. I didn't really believe her and since I am fluent in both, I didn't see any reason to participate. But then I won the raffle, and well it was free and I got curious. So I went. And I am glad I did.

No I didn't meet my future husband, or maybe I did, and I don't know it  yet ... But here is what I know: both men I spoke to were married and happily talked about their wives and kids; and most women I spoke to were married as well. The event was really about practicing either your French or your English, it was fun, and it was very  nicely done.

It was hosted at Cercle Rouge, a cute French restaurant in Tribeca that I had been to before, but I won't lie, I was a little nervous when I got there. It is quite intimidating to be sitting across a complete stranger and having to talk, but the glass of rose and appetizers helped me relax. And after the inital anxiety, I was really enjoying myself.

The event coordinators paired us for 14 minutes at a time. Seven minutes in French, seven minutes in English, and then you switched partners. It was fun.  And I would totally go to the next event on June 22nd if I could, but I will be 30 000 feet in the air on my way to Paris - the life of a flight attendant ...

However, if you are in NYC and want to practice your French or English, you should totally go. It will be at Delice Sarrasin, a French creperie in West Village, and you can book a spot online through EventBrite.

For $31.59, not only do you get to practice your French or English, you also get a glass of cider, hors d'oeuvres, and perhaps to meet your Mr.Perfect, whether French or American. You never know ... :-)

Perhaps I should try speed dating for real .... Just kidding. I would be too terrified.
