What you should know when looking for an apartment in NYC

Lower your expectations, and then lower them again, and then a little bit more.

Fours years ago, when I moved to NYC, finding an apartment hadn't been easy, especially because I was used to such a beautiful apartment in Miami.

I had to come to terms with the fact that a washer and drier in the apartment was probably not going to happen, that an elevator was major luxury, and that I probably couldn't live on my own if I wanted to have money left to eat.

So now that I am moving back to NYC, well my expectations are low. I know what I am getting into and I have even embraced living with strangers. It almost feels like being in a Friends episode. I am cool with having to walk across the street to do my laundry. I am ok with not having a bathtub, even though I ADORE taking baths. Basically I am super easy going. However there are things I don't think I can deal with.

Not having a sink in the bathroom is just not OK: yeah I guess my ex future roommate is right, I can use the bathtub to wash my hands and brush my teeth, but why would I do that? Not having a window in my room is also not exactly going to work for me: yeah there is a window in the living room adjacent to the room, but how is that helping me getting sunlight and fresh air in my room. Oh yeah I guess I could leave my door open and have no privacy.
Apparently living rooms have become optional too in NYC. I visited two apartments with no living room whatsoever, not even a small tiny one. Another apartment did have a living room, but in the middle of it, this guy build a sort of permanent tent that he lives in.
Bathtub in the kitchen is also a no-no for me

Why is it that I want to live in NYC again? -:) Oh yeah Central Park, Broadway musicals and comedy shows ... and the free kayak at Pier 26.
