One in each city (no big deal)

I have always had a hard time giving up my clothes. Even when they are too small to wear or just too out of fashion, it usually takes years for me to get them out in a box and send them to the Salvation Army. I am emotionally attached.

Plus with me moving quite often, it has been hard to keep track of what I really need to keep and what is just there for show. I was scattered between Boston, New York and Florida my first years of flying, which only meant one thing: I needed three pairs of nude shoes, right? One in each city.

However, in an attempt to clean up a bit the guest room my brother kindly keeps for me for the occasional weekend, I dumped all of my Floridian wardrobe on the floor and started refolding - the way my best friend Charlotte taught me. Apparently I didn't know how to fold nor how to hold a fork properly when I first met her, so she made a point of teaching me.

There were many shirts I couldn't even believe belonged to me. Did I ever wear them? Maybe once (at home.) Would I see myself wearing them anytime soon? Not unless I drastically changed styles, and personalities. But I did not throw them out. I couldn't.

Same problem with a cheetah maxi dress I shamefully still own. I no longer wear cheetah print clothing, the dress is cut way too low for my taste, and I have at least   10 other dresses in Florida alone. But what if all 10 were dirty at the same time?Yeah I know I am crazy.

However this post is not my being crazy nor my inability to throw my clothes away ... Well maybe a little bit, but I want to focus on the positive, and that would be the beautiful black dress I found in my closet. It was the dress I wore for my 21st birthday and, amazingly enough, it was totally still in style now. It was THE one right decision I made in terms of clothing style that specific year of my life and it held so many good memories.

THE dress -:)

Of course being delusional, I wondered if it would still fit. True, I was 21 , young and skinny then ... And now I was 26 going on 30. There was no hope. Or maybe there was. So I tried it on. And it zipped EASILY. The dress fit!

Do you also have a hard time giving away your clothes?

Me if I were a brunette

PS I tried the whole "if you didn't wear it for an entire year, give it up" but it doesn't work for me.

  1. I cannot throw or give my clothes away, I am a little bit like you! Last month I got a moment of brightness and decided to sort the clothes I was wearing and the one I was just keeping for nothing! I actually give away (tried to sell them first in a consignment store) 5 whole foods bags of clothes!!! Since that moment I decided to stop buying clothes just because they are pretty and will do it by necessity only. I don't know if it will work though :-p

  2. So tragic yet so true. That little black dress from your 21st is amazing! I am so good at giving away my clothes now. For me, I just promise myself something I really love and am looking forward to buying and keeping now, when I'm 30, when I'm 40...50...90...

Try Buffalo Exchange when you're back in NY. Nothing makes parting with your clothes easier than cold hard cash.
