The day the common man schooled the foodie

I usually don’t have long titles like this, but this was chosen by one of the main protagonists in the story and, unfortunately for my ego and pride, it does describe the situation pretty well.

See I am the foodie. I almost always pick the restaurants my friends and I go to, and in my defense, I usually pick pretty good spots, whether its a hole in the wall kind of place or a Michelin star restaurant.

I sometimes even pick what everyone is eating - no I am not a control freak - I just love to share and try a million different flavors.

So naturally, when my boyfriend and I go for dinner, I do the same to him, and for the most part, he has been really cool about it. Unless it is raw onion or truffle oil, he will try anything.

But on Valentine’s Day of all days, he did not budge when I tried to choose for him.

I don’t remember word for word what I said, but it was definitely along the lines of: “you don’t go to a fancy place to order simple dishes like spaghetti with tomato sauce and basil.” And his response was: ‘if you ask Anthony Bourdain, he would say otherwise.”

I should have shut up then, but instead I might have said that neither him nor Anthony Bourdain knew what they were talking about. Apparently I was the one who didn’t know what I was talking about.

Check out what happens when you google the words Scarpetta and Pasta -->

YES, I KNOW. I messed up big time.

And as if my ego wasn't hurt enough, both the busboy and the waiter mentioned it was everyone's favorite dish. And then the hotel manager raved about it as well. And every online review basically says this is the best pasta they have ever had.
But it's ok. Scarpetta's tomato and basil Spaghetti was worth the humiliation.

Buttery, creamy, so simple, but so rich, it was perfection. And yes I have been to Italy, and yes I was with Italians. But still this was the best, and if it weren't for my boyfriend, I would have missed it.

So of course anytime my boyfriend gets a chance, he brings it up. And unfortunately I have yet to find a way to spin this in my favor. Trust me I tried.

But don't they say, a fault confessed is half redressed. So here I am confessing ... And maybe one day, if I am really really lucky, maybe, he will forget about this "incident" and I will get my foodie status back, along with my ego and pride :-)
